An appeal to all bibliophiles
I do not know how this appeal will be taken as we are in the midst of FB generation where we are only concerned about the number of postings(mostly selfies) and their likes rather than in-depth understanding, introspecting and reflecting on things around us. But I can not help it as it is a big personal calamity to me and if a few of FB and WhatsApp generation take note and help at least for the sake of the oldies like me.
Much has been written about the recent deluge in Kerala and people from all walks of life from throughout the world is helping Kerala to restore the losses. My village Pandanadu in Kerala is situated on the bank of the river Pampa was one of the epicenters of flood calamities. My ancestral home where I used to live along with my grandfather during my school days is right on the bank of this river. My grandfather in as early as 1950 understood the importance of books and reading and established a library for the whole village right at the entrance of his house. the facebook page of the library
(Even though I am an avid reader I understood the importance of reading only when I watched this BBC documentary why reading matters ) Unfortunately, flood fury did not spare the library also.
The details of the damages to this library is given in detail by my brother (who has been taking care of it for the past 23 years) in several newspaper and tV interviews,( in TV and English news )
Through different Malayalam media(tv and Malayalam newspapers) he has made an appeal for help to restore the library. The response was immense. Here I am seeking help from people from all walks of life especially those whose mothers do not speak Malayalam but understand the role of the library in society.
Those who are interested in helping in the restoration may contribute money or books(used or new) and educational cd’s etc or any other items which could be useful for the library and same maybe send to
